Why Are More Couples Struggling to Get Pregnant Today?

As an acupuncturist, I have noticed a growing concern among many individuals and couples: getting pregnant seems more difficult than it was for previous generations.

Many people assume that infertility must be caused by a serious medical condition. While that can sometimes be true, the reality is often more complex. In many cases, fertility challenges are the result of multiple factors interacting over time rather than a single underlying problem.

1. Delayed Childbearing

One of the most significant changes in modern society is the age at which people begin trying to conceive.

A few generations ago, many couples started families in their early twenties. Today, educational goals, career development, financial considerations, and personal life choices often lead people to postpone pregnancy until their thirties or later.

From a reproductive health perspective, female fertility gradually declines after age 30 and decreases more significantly after age 35. Egg quantity and quality naturally change with age. Male fertility can also be affected over time, with gradual changes in sperm quality and motility.

2. Modern Lifestyle Habits

Our daily habits have a profound impact on overall health, including reproductive health.

Chronic sleep deprivation, high stress levels, sedentary lifestyles, lack of exercise, and poor dietary habits can all influence hormone balance and metabolic function.

For women, these factors may contribute to irregular menstrual cycles and ovulatory dysfunction. For men, they may affect sperm production and quality.

3. Increasing Prevalence of Reproductive Health Conditions

Certain reproductive conditions appear to be increasingly common today.

Women may experience conditions such as:

  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

  • Endometriosis

  • Fallopian tube disorders

  • Diminished ovarian reserve

Men may experience:

  • Low sperm count

  • Reduced sperm motility

  • Poor sperm morphology

Many of these conditions can affect the chances of natural conception.

4. The Impact of Chronic Stress

One factor that is often overlooked is stress.

Many couples enter the fertility journey with hope and excitement. However, as months pass without success, anxiety and frustration often increase.

Although stress is rarely the sole cause of infertility, chronic stress can negatively affect sleep quality, hormonal regulation, emotional well-being, and overall health. Over time, these effects may further reduce reproductive function.

An Important Perspective

One of the most common misconceptions about fertility is the belief that pregnancy should happen immediately.

In reality, even healthy couples with no known fertility issues typically have only about a 20% chance of conceiving naturally in any given month.

For this reason, several months of trying without success does not necessarily indicate a serious problem.

A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine views fertility through a broader lens.

Rather than focusing solely on reproductive organs, TCM considers the balance of the entire body. Long-term stress, inadequate rest, emotional strain, and lifestyle imbalances may affect the body’s ability to maintain optimal reproductive function.

In TCM theory, healthy fertility depends on the harmonious relationship between the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney systems, as well as the proper circulation of Qi and Blood.

This is why fertility support in Chinese Medicine often involves improving overall health rather than focusing exclusively on reproduction itself.

When Should You Seek Professional Evaluation?

If you are under the age of 35 and have been trying to conceive for more than one year without success, or if you are over 35 and have been trying for more than six months, it may be beneficial to seek a professional fertility evaluation.

Understanding the underlying factors is often the first step toward developing an effective and individualized plan.

Every symptom the body presents is a form of communication. Learning to understand those signals may provide valuable insight into your overall health and fertility journey.
