Your Nervous System: The Missing Piece of Health

One of the most common things I hear from patients in my clinic is:

“I’m exhausted, but I can’t sleep.”

“I feel stressed all the time.”

“Nothing is seriously wrong, but I just don’t feel like myself.”

“My tests are normal, yet I still don’t feel well.”

Although these concerns may seem unrelated, they often share a common root: a dysregulated nervous system.

Modern life moves fast. Between work, family responsibilities, financial pressures, social media, and constant notifications, many of us spend our days in a state of continuous stimulation.

Over time, we become so accustomed to feeling stressed that we forget what genuine relaxation feels like.

Living in Survival Mode

The nervous system plays a vital role in regulating sleep, digestion, immune function, pain perception, emotional responses, and overall well-being.

When we encounter stress, the body activates a protective response often referred to as “fight or flight.”

This response is designed to help us deal with short-term challenges.

The problem is that for many people today, stress never truly ends.

Deadlines, responsibilities, relationship challenges, and worries about the future can keep the body in a constant state of alertness.

When the nervous system remains activated for too long, the body has difficulty shifting into a state of repair and recovery.

As a result, people may experience:

  • Poor sleep

  • Fatigue

  • Anxiety

  • Muscle tension

  • Digestive discomfort

  • Increased sensitivity to stress

  • Chronic pain

  • Frequent illness

In many cases, these symptoms are not signs that the body is failing.

They are signs that the body has been working too hard for too long.

What Does Traditional Chinese Medicine Say?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) does not describe health through the language of nerves and neurotransmitters. However, for thousands of years, Chinese medicine has recognized the close relationship between emotional well-being and physical health.

One of the core concepts in TCM is Shen, often translated as “spirit” or “mind.”

Shen reflects our emotional balance, mental clarity, sleep quality, and overall sense of inner stability.

When Shen is calm, the body functions more harmoniously.

When Shen is disturbed, both emotional and physical symptoms can arise.

Although the terminology is different, there are interesting parallels between this concept and what modern medicine understands about nervous system regulation.

Liver Qi Stagnation and Modern Stress

One of the most common patterns I see in practice is what Chinese medicine calls Liver Qi Stagnation.

In TCM, the Liver is responsible for maintaining the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body.

When stress accumulates, emotions are suppressed, or life becomes overwhelming, that flow may become restricted.

Common symptoms include:

  • Irritability

  • Mood swings

  • Tight shoulders and neck

  • Difficulty relaxing

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Digestive issues

  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed

Many patients tell me:

“I know everything is okay, but I still feel anxious.”

Often, this is not a failure of willpower.

Sometimes it is a sign that the body has been under stress for too long.

When the nervous system becomes exhausted, even small challenges can feel much larger than they really are.

How Can Acupuncture Help?

One of the most common responses I hear after an acupuncture treatment is:

“I finally feel relaxed.”

For some patients, it may be the first time in weeks—or even months—that they have felt their body truly let go of tension.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, acupuncture helps regulate the flow of Qi, support balance within the body, and calm the Shen.

From a modern perspective, acupuncture may help encourage the body to shift away from a prolonged stress response and toward a state of restoration.

This is one reason acupuncture is commonly used to support conditions related to stress, including insomnia, anxiety, chronic pain, digestive complaints, and fatigue.

Health Is More Than Nutrition and Exercise

When people think about health, they often focus on diet, supplements, and exercise.

While these are important, another essential piece is often overlooked: nervous system regulation.

A healthy body is not one that is constantly pushing harder.

A healthy body is one that knows how to recover.

Sometimes what we need is not more productivity, more discipline, or more effort.

Sometimes we simply need to slow down long enough for the body to remember how to heal.

True wellness is not about never feeling stressed.

It is about having the ability to return to balance when stress inevitably appears.
